01Unit price per tank, stating material, capacity and wall thickness
A 5,000 litre tank with a thin single layer wall is not comparable to one with a thicker multi layer wall. Until every price names its material, capacity and wall on the face of the offer, the cheapest number on the table may simply be a lighter tank.
02Price basis, ex works, delivered or installed on site
Tanks are bulky for their value, and roof tanks often need a crane, so freight, lifting and installation are a real share of the cost. A lower ex works price can quietly lose to a higher installed one once the trucking and crane are added.
03Fittings and installation itemised separately
Suppliers differ most on the fittings, stays and assembly, not the tank shell. A lump sum hides the dear lines, and an itemised offer is the only kind a comparison sheet can read line by line.
04Lead time from purchase order
Large sectional tanks are often fabricated to order, and the plumbing and handover dates depend on them. The cheapest tank that arrives after the plumbing crews have moved on costs more than the dearest one that arrives on time.
05Potable water approval and test certificate for the quoted standard
Food grade and drinking water safe are certificate claims. Asked at quotation stage the certificate is priced and committed. Asked at delivery it becomes an argument, and an uncertified tank cannot be connected to a drinking water supply.
06Warranty period and what it covers
Warranties on tanks range from the shell only to the shell, fittings and leak tightness after installation. Two offers at the same price with different warranty cover are not the same offer, so the terms belong in the quotation.
07Offer validity period
Tank prices track resin and steel input costs. A seven day validity and a thirty day validity are not the same offer at the same number, because one of them expires before your approval cycle finishes.

Which tank material suits drinking water storage?
Each of the common materials can hold drinking water when the surfaces in contact with the water are approved for it, so the certificate matters more than the material. Ask for a potable water approval such as WRAS or NSF/ANSI 61 for the resin or lining, BS EN 13280 for GRP sectional tanks, and SASO conformity for the delivered tank. Polyethylene tanks on a roof also need UV stabilised resin and an opaque wall so algae cannot grow inside.
Should a sectional tank be quoted with installation?
Yes, and as separate lines. A GRP or steel sectional tank arrives as panels and is assembled on site, so the panels, the internal stays, the gaskets and bolts, the fittings (inlet, outlet, overflow, drain and access ladder) and the assembly with its water test can each differ widely between suppliers.
